NBA 2003-04 Roland Ratings!

What's the best measure of a player's performance? While some are content with conventional stats like points, rebounds, and field goal percentage, I believe the best gauge of a player's worth to a specific team comes from looking at the difference in how the team plays with the player on court versus performance with the player off court.

Now this rating isn't an absolute measure of a player's ability, but it does represent how successful a player is with a given team. In general the player with the best Roland Rating on a team is the difference maker (exclude the guys who play a statistically insignificant number of minutes). When the top guy is on the floor the team performs at a much higher level.

These ratings represent a player's value to a particular team and are not intended to be an accurate gauge of the ability and talent of the player away from the specific team.

Explanation: The on court +/- number repesents the team's net points with the player on the floor per 48 minutes, while the off court number is the team's net with the player off the floor per 48 minutes. The Roland Rating is the difference between the two, with a positive number indicating the team has played better with the player than without.

Current Raw +/- Leaders:
Garnett +587, Cassell +541, Duncan +531, B.Miller +508, Artest +489

All hail the king, all hail Kevin Garnett. While Jason Kidd kept it interesting through most of the season, even grabbing the lead for several weeks, Garnett was too strong, too consistent, and last year's Roland Rating champion repeated in ultimately convincing fashion.

Kidd wound up 4th overall, with Sam Cassell and Brad Miller squeezing in front of him in the final weeks. Shaq rounded out the top five, and come to think of it, that wouldn't be too bad a starting lineup for a team to trot out!

Some players who don't currently qualify on minutes played include Rasheed Wallace (at +11.9 for the Pistons), Frank Williams of the Knicks (+7.8), Michael Pietrus of the Warriors (+7.3), Bob Sura for the Hawks (+6.7), Corie Blount formerly of the Bulls (+6.7), and Theo Ratliff while with the Trailblazers (+6.7).

While the numbers are fun to look at in a league wide basis, the best use is on a team level where you can assess which players are producing and which aren't in the climate and roster of a specific squad. To see the ratings by Team click here
