Game by Game plus/minus Won-Lost recordsPlus/Minus stats are certainly becoming more in vogue among NBA insiders, but one drawback is that they don't represent consistency very well. A player could be +25 one night, and then follow up with -5, -7, -3 scores in the next three games and still show a healthy +10 overall net.Another way to look at how the team fares with the player on court is by assigning a "Win" to any game where the team was on the positive side of the +/- ledger with the player, and a "Loss" for any game with a negative +/- score (games with a +0 plus/minus are "ties" and ignored). Here are the Regular Season leaders so far in plus/minus W-L percentage:
The game-by-game Winning percentage is of course very biased in favor of players on the good teams, so it's no shock that the top three spots are held down currently by Pistons, and all five Detroit starters are in the top eight! Still let's give Chauncey Billups and the gang a rousing round of applause for their performance thus far. You'll notice though it wouldn't take a lot to drop down the standings -- and the usual suspects like Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan are loitering with intent to take over the #1 ranking. Not to mention sparkplugs like Boris Diaw and Bobby Jackson. All of the high ranking players should be commended for their night in, night out effort. And what you might ask, of our friend Ron Artest? Ron stood at 12-4 (75%) when the latest "head clearing time" commenced. Also of note is Shaquille O'Neal's 12-5 (70.6%) start to the season. We generally don't like to focus on the bottom ranked players in a category, but the outcry from the heckling public demands we give a little look:
Again, these numbers are clearly tied closely to the overall team records, but let's just admit we've been calling for less playing time for Juwan Howard, Antonio Davis and Jeff McInnis all season! Of all these names though, big Al Jefferson is the one perhaps that causes the most concern, since Boston is banking a lot on this young giant's development. Learning how to help a team win, as opposed to just posting good personal stats, is one of the separators between "NBA player" and "NBA Star".
